North to South

Hi de ho!
We're off on a 3 day trek now so thought we should check in!
Flew down to El Calafate from Iguazú - tropical jungle to south Andean foothills. Can't get much more of a shock to the system.
We spent yesterday gawping at the Perito Moreno glacier, a massive 55m tall slab of ice flowing down off the iceshelf, that creaked and cracked letting off gun-shot sounds when icebergs carved off it. Mindblowing. It's one of the only glaciers that is still advancing.
We're now at El Chaltén, the base for hiking and mountaineering into this section of the Andes. We're going for a little walk into the countryside for 3 nights (camping en route), hopefully combining this with a (supervised) trek on a glacier halfway through. After this, we'll head up to the Cueva de los Manos and on to Puerto Madryn to check out the nature reserve on the peninsula.
It's unlikely we'll get to a computer over the next week (no wifi on the glaciers!)... thank you to people leaving their comments - it´s great to stay in touch.

    Bom saber onde estais!
    Agora para um pouco de notícias daqui: Hoje a Fá, Tozé e eu fomos almoçar á Figueira com a Mana Ana, depois viemos aqui para Coimbra. A Mãe do Tozé faz 101 anos hoje... Eu fiquei aqui com a Guida, amanhã voltamos para Lisboa. Um xi muito grande, e bons passeios!

    Good Lord! Guinea pigs on your journey.

    It sound like hamsters for John on his next journey. Actually Syrian hamsters (the ones you get in the pet shop) are all descended from a single couple caught in Syria early last century - it is thought that they are extinct in the wild.

    Do make sure you eat guinea pigs if you get the chance - I think Stephen Fry was mentioning just the other day on The Today Programme that he hadn't felt "truly alive" until he ate his first small mammal. YO GuYs! Glaciers sound fantastic - as does camping trek. Have you had any creepy-crawly encounters yet?
